The underlying honesty was correct; the sentences are being rewritten to speak about the evidence rather than about our files.
Cosmetic — how it looks, not what it says.
Twenty-seven pages of this publication carry sentences written in the wrong voice: they describe this publication’s own files — “a figure this library holds no source for,” “the one trial this corpus holds” — where they should describe the world. The reader’s question is what the evidence shows; our filing system is not part of the answer.
The defect is one of register, not of substance. In nearly every instance the underlying honesty is real and correct: a label figure genuinely is settled by the box in your hand, an often-quoted number genuinely lacks a source, a mechanism genuinely is one author’s proposal. The rewrite keeps every one of those boundaries and states them as facts about the world and its evidence — what is measured, what is unmeasured, whose idea a thing is — rather than as facts about us.
The repairs ride the normal verification chain page by page. Where a sentence disclosed that a source has not been read or acquired, the fix is being pursued as an acquisition first, so the disclosure can be replaced by the source itself rather than by a smoother sentence. Sentences that already speak about the world — “no controlled study shows this,” “an author’s heuristic, which nobody has tested” — are correct as written and stay.
Derivation note for the record: candidate sentences were enumerated by three sweeps, every candidate read in place, and the affected pages fixed by checking what each page’s readers are actually served — the register appears here in the page’s published state, not merely in our working copy. A larger set of the same sentences exists in unpublished working copies and is being repaired before it ever reaches a reader; those pages are not listed here because their readers never saw the defect.
A correction to that check, September 5th: the first derivation reconstructed each page’s published state from the last saved version before its publication timestamp. Our publishing tool records the timestamp first and saves moments later, so the reconstruction read a version slightly older than the one readers received, and it missed sentences introduced in the same act that published them. A re-check of every candidate page with the corrected reconstruction found two more pages serving the register. Both are counted above, and both were repaired before this correction was published.

The title of this record was changed.
It read: “Some sentences on this page talked about our library — what our files hold or cannot source — instead of talking about the world and its evidence. We are rewriting them to say plainly what is measured, what is unmeasured, and where a claim comes from.”
It now reads: “The underlying honesty was correct; the sentences are being rewritten to speak about the evidence rather than about our files.”

The wording of this record was corrected.
It read: “This page, and twenty-one others, carry sentences written in the wrong voice: they describe this publication’s own files — “a figure this library holds no source for,” “the one trial this corpus holds” — where they should describe the world. The reader’s question is what the evidence shows; our filing system is not part of the answer.”
It now reads: “Twenty-five pages of this publication carry sentences written in the wrong voice: they describe this publication’s own files — “a figure this library holds no source for,” “the one trial this corpus holds” — where they should describe the world. The reader’s question is what the evidence shows; our filing system is not part of the answer.”
The list of affected pages was corrected: 22 → 25.
Added: companion:196, companion:466, companion:486.
