The Craving Shift from Sleep Deprivation

Why tired brains crave junk food—and why you can't resist.

What the evidence says

  • Sleep deprivation increases appetite for calorie-dense, high-carbohydrate foods by 33–45% — under `csh03`'s controlled protocol: 12 healthy young men, 2 days at 4 hours (the 4-hour and 10-hour figures are not in `csh03`'s held abstract*, which says only "2 days of sleep restriction and 2 days of sleep extension"; full text is not held), with caloric intake and activity held constant. Under free intake the hormonal picture reverses; see `ksh04`, which holds both studies*[1]
  • *The authors' own stated limitation, held for the first time on 2026-09-02 and carried by no file until now: "The study included only 12 young men and did not measure energy expenditure." So `csh03` cannot speak to energy balance. It measured hormones and subjective ratings of hunger and appetite — not intake, not expenditure, not weight. A page may say sleep restriction shifted appetite hormones and self-reported hunger in these twelve men. It may not say sleep loss makes people gain weight on this citation*[1]
  • Amygdala reactivity to food cues is amplified (T = 3.08, p = 0.006)[2]
  • That is emotional salience, not reward: the same study found ventral striatum activity unchanged (p = 0.79), which is what separates the two[2]
  • Prefrontal cortex (self-control) activity decreases[2]
  • Result: "double hit" of increased desire + decreased control[2]
  • Behavioral result: significant increase in desire for high-calorie foods (~600 additional calories)[2]
  • Bias is selective: sleep restriction increases brain activation to unhealthy foods (pizza, doughnuts, chocolate) but not healthy foods (carrots, yogurt, oatmeal)[3]
  • Decreased right insula activity during sleep restriction correlates with increased food intake — impaired interoceptive monitoring of satiety[3]
