Why we cite it

The experiment behind one of this library's most specific behavioural claims, held until now only through a chapter that recounts it. Normal-weight subjects were separated into high- and low-restraint groups and given preloads of varying size; high-restraint intake rose with preload size while low-restraint intake fell — the counter-regulation effect. The authors concluded that **relative deprivation rather than obesity per se** may be the critical determinant of individual differences in eating behaviour, and named "restraint" as the mechanism. 627 citations (Europe PMC, 2026-08-31).
