Why we cite it
Independent laboratory analysis of movie theater popcorn from the three largest US chains (Regal, AMC, Cinemark), published in CSPI’s Nutrition Action Healthletter in December 2009. Unlike self-reported industry nutrition data, CSPI purchased samples from three locations per chain and sent them to an independent lab — revealing that companies substantially underreported calories (AMC’s “225-calorie” small was actually 370 calories). For the project, this provides the concrete numbers behind the movie theater companion: a “small” popcorn at Regal delivers 670 calories and 34g of saturated fat before the film starts, and a medium-popcorn-plus-soda combo reaches 1,610 calories. The data makes the abstract concept of portion distortion viscerally concrete.
