Raynor HA. Can limiting dietary variety assist with reducing energy intake and weight loss? Physiol Behav. 2012;106(3):356-361.

Why we cite it

An integrative review synthesizing evidence that dietary variety drives overconsumption through sensory-specific satiety and dishabituation, and that strategically limiting variety in energy-dense foods can reduce intake. The key practical insight is the asymmetric approach: restrict variety in high-fat, energy-dense foods (where variety prolongs eating) while maintaining or increasing variety in nutrient-dense foods. Supported by NWCR data showing successful long-term weight maintainers consume significantly less variety in high-fat food groups. Relevant to the project as a behavioral mechanism linking food environment complexity to overeating.
