Why we cite it
The metabolic ward demonstration that the body actively defends its usual weight through compensatory changes in energy expenditure — reducing expenditure after weight loss and increasing it after weight gain. The finding that obese and never-obese subjects show the same compensatory response is what makes this a result about weight regulation rather than about a metabolic deficiency in obesity. In the paper’s own words, the compensatory changes ”oppose the maintenance of a body weight that is different from the usual weight”; set point occurs in it only in the titles of works it cites. Scope: 41 subjects — 18 obese and 23 never-obese — studied inpatient at Rockefeller University Hospital at usual weight and after losing 10 to 20 percent of it.
