Why we cite it
A meta-analysis of social relationships and mortality risk. Across 148 studies and 308,849 participants it finds a 50% increased likelihood of survival for people with stronger social relationships, an effect that held across age, sex, initial health status, cause of death and follow-up period, and differed significantly by the type of social measurement. The paper places social connection above obesity and physical inactivity as a mortality risk factor. 3,809 citations (Europe PMC, 2026-08-31).
