Why we cite it

Review article from an AJCN supplement evaluating why high-fat foods promote overconsumption. Examines preloading studies and finds that the overconsumption of high-fat foods is driven more by energy density and palatability than by a simple macronutrient-specific satiety deficit. In normal-weight, unrestrained men, yogurts varying in fat or carbohydrate content had equivalent satiety effects in dose-response preloading tests. However, obese individuals and those concerned with body weight showed reduced satiety from fat compared to carbohydrate — a small but significant insensitivity to energy from fat. The paper frames the problem as one of energy density rather than macronutrient identity, laying groundwork for Rolls’ later Volumetrics approach.
