Why we cite it
Longitudinal study (298 fathers, 294 mothers, 5-year follow-up) using structural equation modeling and the DEBQ to test whether eating styles mediate the relationship between depression and weight gain. The central finding: depression does not directly cause weight gain (overall effect non-significant), but emotional eating serves as the specific mediator — depression → emotional eating → weight gain — and this pathway operates only in women. External eating and restrained eating did not mediate in either sex. The mediation was independent of 5-HTTLPR genotype (serotonin transporter gene), suggesting the pathway is behaviorally rather than genetically driven. Referenced in companion 399.
