Smith MM, Sherry SB, Chen S, Saklofske DH, Mushquash C, Flett GL, Hewitt PL. The perniciousness of perfectionism: a meta-analytic review of the perfectionism-suicide relationship. J Pers. 2018;86(3):522-542.
Why we cite it
A meta-analysis of the perfectionism-suicide relationship pooling 45 studies (N=11,747). The critical finding for the project is that both perfectionistic concerns (socially prescribed, self-critical) and perfectionistic strivings (self-oriented, high standards) show associations with suicide ideation — challenging the widely held distinction between “maladaptive” and “adaptive” perfectionism. This supports the companion’s argument that perfectionism is not simply high standards but a pattern with measurable psychological costs.
