Why we cite it

The first experimental study to demonstrate that a self-compassion induction can attenuate the disinhibition effect (overeating after eating a "forbidden" food) in restrained eaters. Uniquely distinguishes between two components of rigid dietary restraint — restrictive eating and eating guilt — showing they moderate behavior differently. Demonstrates that self-criticism after diet-breaking, not the eating itself, drives continued overeating, and that interrupting the self-critical response restores normal compensatory eating.
