Why we cite it
A theoretical paper on why trying not to think about something can bring it to mind. Proposes that mental control involves two processes: an operating process (resource-intensive, seeks intended state) and a monitoring process (low-resource, scans for failures). The paper’s own condition is ”conditions that reduce capacity”. Under those conditions ”the monitoring process may supersede the operating process and thus enhance the person’s sensitivity to mental contents that are the ironic opposite of those that are intended.” The held abstract mentions neither food nor suppression.
