Simpson SJ, Raubenheimer D. The Nature of Nutrition: A Unifying Framework from Animal Adaptation to Human Obesity. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press; 2012. 256 p.
Why we cite it
The authors’ own statement of the protein leverage hypothesis and the Geometric Framework for Nutrition. It presents a multi-dimensional modelling approach that maps how organisms balance intake of multiple nutrients simultaneously, with cross-species evidence from insects to humans for its hypothesis that protein intake is tightly regulated, so that when protein is diluted by carbohydrates and fats, total caloric intake increases to reach protein targets. The authors later published Eat Like the Animals (2020) as a popular-audience treatment of the same research.
