Why we cite it
A 2023 peer-reviewed review in Biology (MDPI) of the neurobiology of pair bonding, covering, in its own words, ”current rodent and human literature on bonding, focusing on oxytocin (OT), the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) reward system, and arginine vasopressin (AVP)”. Prairie voles are its main animal model. In mother–pup interactions, it reports, ”OT binds to oxytocin receptors (OXTRs) in the medial preoptic area (MPOA), which in turn leads to DA release from projections from the VTA to the nucleus accumbens (NAc), both regions implicated in motivation and reward”.
