Why we cite it
A short review setting out how the brain’s natural-reward systems relate to the action of addictive drugs: in its words, ”the brain evolved to respond not to drugs but to natural rewards, such as food and sex”, so understanding natural reward is the route to understanding addiction. It surveys the competing accounts of what mesocorticolimbic dopamine actually does (hedonic impact, reward prediction, incentive salience) rather than settling among them.
