Demonstrates in mice that the metabolic strategy for surviving infection differs by pathogen type: fasting protected in bacterial models while feeding/glucose protected in viral infection. Study design as held: C57BL/6J mice, a single facility, with Listeria monocytogenes and LPS-induced sepsis as the bacterial models and influenza as the viral one. Provides a mechanistic basis for infection-associated anorexia as an adaptive response, with implications for how nutrition during illness should be understood.
