Barnosky AR, Hoddy KK, Unterman TG, Varady KA. Intermittent fasting vs daily calorie restriction for type 2 diabetes prevention: a review of human findings. Translational Research. 2014 Oct;164(4):302-311. doi:10.1016/j.trsl.2014.05.013. PMID: 24993615.

Why we cite it

Provides a head-to-head review comparing intermittent fasting and alternate-day fasting with continuous daily calorie restriction for weight loss and diabetes risk reduction. Directly relevant to the project: the review finds that IF/ADF produce less total weight loss than CR and comparable reductions in visceral fat, fasting insulin and insulin resistance. **That the metabolic benefits of fasting patterns may therefore be partly independent of total weight lost is this library's reading, not the review's**, which calls its findings *"preliminary"*. (Corrected 2026-09-10 from wording that presented the paper as clarifying *"a common misconception"* and let the independence inference read as its finding.)
