Why we cite it
Popular science book presenting the hormonal theory of obesity — arguing that insulin, not calories, is the primary driver of weight gain and that insulin resistance is why diets fail long-term. Fung frames weight loss as a two-step problem: (1) what you eat affects insulin in the short term, but (2) insulin resistance keeps the body set weight high regardless of diet. His key insight for the project is that fasting addresses the second step that diets miss — by routinely lowering insulin, fasting breaks the resistance cycle and allows the body set weight to decrease. Chapters 19-20 provide the practical framework used in the project's treatment of fed/fasted states and meal timing.
