EEG study classifying participants as good (N=17) or poor (N=20) heartbeat perceivers using Schandry's heartbeat detection task, then measuring event-related potentials (ERPs) during emotional picture viewing (International Affective Picture System). Good heartbeat perceivers showed significantly greater P300 and slow wave ERP amplitudes for emotional pictures and reported higher subjective emotional arousal ratings. Heartbeat perception scores correlated positively with both neural responses and subjective arousal. Demonstrates that interoceptive sensitivity — the ability to accurately perceive internal bodily signals — is significantly associated with intensity of emotional experience and cortical processing of emotional content. Relevant to companion 400 (the-connected-one) as evidence that body awareness and emotional awareness are neurologically linked, supporting the value of developing interoceptive skills for better eating and emotional regulation.
