Why we cite it

The paper testing the claim, ”commonly asserted” in its words, that the average American gains five pounds over the holidays. By prospectively weighing 195 adults across the holiday season and following up at one year, it showed the actual average gain was only 0.37 kg — a fraction of the popular figure. The gain was ”not reversed during spring or summer months” among the 165 who returned for follow-up, so that ”the net 0.48 kg fall/winter weight gain appears likely to contribute to the increase in body weight that frequently occurs during adulthood”.
