Consumption of ultra-processed foods and cancer risk: results from NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort. BMJ. 2018;360:k322. doi:10.1136/bmj.k322

Why we cite it

The first prospective cohort study of ultra-processed food intake and cancer, by the authors’ own account (”no previous prospective epidemiological study has evaluated the association between food processing and risk cancer”). It supplies the cancer association that the NOVA authors’ commentary summarises. It also shows the association’s limits: two of the four cancer outcomes tested were not significant, and the authors state that residual confounding ”cannot be entirely excluded owing to the observational design”. It is an association in a volunteer cohort, not evidence of cause.
