Why we cite it
Supplies the argument the NOVA authors’ commentary compresses into “experimental studies indicate”. The review proposes that ultra-processed foods, through acellular nutrients and additives such as emulsifiers and non-caloric sweeteners, reshape the gut microbiome toward inflammation and metabolic disease. The authors state themselves that animal findings “largely form the basis of this paper” and that human data “are still scarce”: the microbiome claim is a hypothesis supported mainly by rodent studies, not a demonstrated human effect.
