Adriaanse MA, Kroese FM, Gillebaart M, De Ridder DTD. Effortless inhibition: habit mediates the relation between self-control and unhealthy snack consumption. Front Psychol. 2014;5:444.
Why we cite it
A study demonstrating that trait self-control reduces unhealthy snacking not through effortful resistance but through the formation of healthier habits that then operate automatically. In 77 participants (7-day snack diary), unhealthy snacking habit strength mediated the relationship between self-control and snack intake (indirect effect: -201.75 kcal/week, 95% CI [-522.9, -39.2]). Critically, self-control was unrelated to fruit consumption, suggesting the mechanism is specific to inhibiting unhealthy behaviors rather than promoting healthy ones. This supports the trigger identification companion (289): the goal is not perpetual willpower but building automatic responses that make healthy choices effortless.
