Foster-Powell K, Holt SH, Brand-Miller JC. International table of glycemic index and glycemic load values: 2002. Am J Clin Nutr. 2002 Jul;76(1):5-56. doi:10.1093/ajcn/76.1.5
Why we cite it
The second edition of the GI reference tables (corrected 2026-09-02, card 6NM98H: previously “the definitive GI reference tables”), nearly tripling the original 1995 table to ~1,300 entries covering 750+ foods. Introduced glycemic load (GL) values alongside GI. It cites ”Several prospective observational studies” showing that a high-glycemic-load diet is ”independently associated with” increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. The epidemiology is relayed; this paper is a table (corrected 2026-09-19 from ”Provided the epidemiological basis for linking”). Later superseded by the 2008 update (cgi03) with 2,480+ entries.
