Trepanowski JF, Bloomer RJ. The impact of religious fasting on human health. Nutr J. 2010 Nov 22;9:57. doi:10.1186/1475-2891-9-57. PMID: 21092212. PMCID: PMC2995774.
Why we cite it
A review of health effects across three religious fasting traditions (gold open access). It reports mixed findings for Ramadan, attributed to differences in daily fasting time, smoking, medication and intravenous fluids, and food choices. It reports favourable effects on body mass and lipids for Greek Orthodox fasting. For the Daniel Fast it reports the authors’ own ”initial investigation”. It is not evidence that diverse fasting patterns produce metabolic benefits across the board.
