Pepin A, Stanhope KL, Imbeault P. Are Fruit Juices Healthier Than Sugar-Sweetened Beverages? A Review. Nutrients. 2019 May 7;11(5):1006. doi:10.3390/nu11051006

Why we cite it

Provides a direct comparison of fructose content between natural fruit juices and sugar-sweetened beverages, showing the two are remarkably similar. Importantly, the review finds that despite comparable fructose loads, it remains unclear whether juice causes the same metabolic consequences as soda — fruit juices contain bioactive compounds (flavanones, vitamins, antioxidants) absent from soda.
