Why we cite it
Foundational study demonstrating that group mean exercise-induced weight loss conceals large individual variability and divergent compensatory responses. Introduced the compensator/non-compensator classification methodology (actual vs predicted weight loss) that became standard in the field. Showed that compensatory responses are primarily behavioural (increased energy intake and fat preference) rather than metabolic (RMR changes non-significant), directly supporting the project’s framing that individual eating responses to exercise determine weight outcomes.
