Why we cite it

Narrative review from the world-leading Leeds appetite research group providing an integrative framework for understanding exercise-appetite interactions. Proposes that fat-free mass (not fat mass or BMI) is the primary driver of energy intake and meal size, and that exercise exerts a dual control on appetite: increasing fasting hunger (variable between individuals) while improving postprandial satiety (consistent across individuals). This framework explains the large individual variability in exercise-induced weight change and supports the project’s framing that exercise recalibrates appetite regulation rather than simply burning calories.
