Trabulsi J, Schoeller DA. Evaluation of dietary assessment instruments against doubly labeled water, a biomarker of habitual energy intake. American Journal of Physiology – Endocrinology and Metabolism. 2001 Nov;281(5):E891-E899. doi:10.1152/ajpendo.2001.281.5.E891. PMID: 11595643.

Why we cite it

A review comparing the major dietary self-report instruments (food frequency questionnaires, 24-hour recalls, food records) against doubly labeled water, a biomarker of habitual energy intake. It concludes that ”none of the self-reported intake instruments demonstrates greater accuracy against DLW”, and that ”the physical and psychological characteristics of study participants play a significant role in the underreporting bias observed in these studies”.
