Why we cite it

Review examining the bidirectional relationship between body composition changes and metabolic rate changes with ageing. Key insight: the age-related reduction in RMR is greater than what body composition changes alone explain — organ metabolic rates themselves decline with age. In older adults, calculated RMR (from measured organ masses assuming stable metabolic rates) exceeded measured RMR by ~145 kcal/day, confirming that tissue-specific metabolic activity decreases independently of organ mass loss.
