Why we cite it

Review establishing organ- and tissue-specific energy requirements. Widely cited for the finding that skeletal muscle burns approximately 5.9 kcal per pound per day at rest — the source of the commonly rounded “~6 calories per pound” figure. Demonstrates that a few highly metabolic organs (brain, liver, heart, kidneys) account for the majority of resting energy expenditure despite comprising a small percentage of body weight. This contextualises the common claim that “building muscle boosts metabolism” — it does, but modestly.
