Why we cite it

A study in transgenic mice showing that short-term fasting upregulates autophagy in brain neurons, against what the paper calls the ”current dogma” that ”the brain escapes this effect, perhaps because it is a metabolically privileged site”. Using GFP-LC3 transgenic mice and confocal microscopy combined with transmission electron microscopy, it shows increased neuronal autophagosomes after food restriction: a ~4-fold increase in Purkinje autophagosome number (p < 0.0002) and a >3-fold neurite signal at 24 hours (p = 0.004), in mice restricted for 24 or 48 hours, with diminished neuronal mTOR activity. It is a mouse study.
