Green E, Murphy C. Altered processing of sweet taste in the brain of diet soda drinkers. Physiology & Behavior. 2012;107(4):560-567. doi:10.1016/j.physbeh.2012.05.006
Why we cite it
A small fMRI study (24 young adults) comparing brain responses to sucrose and saccharin in self-reported diet-soda drinkers and non-drinkers. It is the primary study behind a finding Swithers’s 2013 review relays, and it shows what the review’s summary leaves out. The single region where non-drinkers differentiated the two sweeteners responded more to saccharin than to sucrose, the opposite of the authors’ expectation. The groups were matched on BMI, so the study says nothing directly about weight.
