Pepino MY, Tiemann CD, Patterson BW, Wice BM, Klein S. Sucralose affects glycemic and hormonal responses to an oral glucose load. Diabetes Care. 2013 Sep;36(9):2530-2535. doi:10.2337/dc12-2221. PMCID: PMC3747933.
Why we cite it
Provides direct experimental evidence that sucralose is not metabolically inert — a single dose before a glucose load significantly increased insulin secretion, raised peak glucose, and decreased insulin sensitivity in 17 obese subjects (BMI 42.3 ± 1.6, insulin-sensitive) who did not regularly consume non-nutritive sweeteners. The randomized crossover design and clinical trial registration strengthen the evidence. It shows that higher insulin output and reduced insulin sensitivity occurred together, acutely, from a single sucralose exposure — in that sample.
