Book
Davis W. Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health. Rodale Books; 2011. 292 p.
Why we cite it
A controversial popular health book arguing that modern wheat — altered through decades of hybridization — is uniquely harmful beyond celiac disease, driving blood sugar spikes, visceral fat accumulation (“wheat belly”), and a range of chronic health problems. Advocates complete wheat elimination. Referenced by companion 253 as a “controversial but thought-provoking” perspective, not as scientific evidence.
About the author
William Davis, MD, is a cardiologist based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from St. Louis University School of Medicine (1985), completed residency at Ohio State University, and did advanced training in interventional cardiology at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals, where he also served as Director of the Cardiovascular Fellowship and Assistant Professor of Medicine. He now focuses on prevention and reversal of coronary disease. He is co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Realize Therapeutics Corp. Wheat Belly became a New York Times bestseller within a month of its 2011 publication.
Important caveat: Davis’s broader claims about wheat have been criticised by mainstream nutrition science and medical experts as unsupported by evidence-based medicine. The book is a popular health argument, not a scientific publication.
