Why we cite it
Extends the Rolls et al. 1981 (cpi23/csv02) sensory-specific satiety paradigm by showing that even adding condiments to the same base food — not introducing entirely new foods — can renew appetite and increase intake. Twenty-one subjects ate French fries then brownies in three conditions: monotonous (no condiments), simultaneous (condiments available throughout), and successive (condiments introduced after initial eating). Both variety conditions significantly increased total intake over monotonous (p<0.001). In the successive condition, hedonic ratings for fries declined during eating but rebounded when ketchup was introduced, directly demonstrating that sensory renewal drives additional consumption. This is more ecologically valid than prior studies using entirely different foods — people commonly add condiments mid-meal.
