The “2005” traces to a drafted further-reading line naming a Handbook of Eating Disorders (2005) chapter, ”The influence of others on eating”, which survives in `research/fc-further-reading-needing-citation.md` under 068, 078, 107 and 117. The 078 proofread report calls that line wrong in title, venue and year, and all four live pages now cite the 2003 review (checked 2026-09-10). Nothing held shows such a chapter exists: the held file only guesses (”likely refers to a reprinted or adapted version”). (Corrected 2026-09-10 from ”Some companions reference this as” the Handbook and ”Herman and Polivy published a related chapter in that handbook”, which stated the held file’s guess as fact.)
Why we cite it
The normative framework for understanding social influence on eating. While earlier research documented that people eat more in groups (social facilitation) and match companions’ intake (modeling), these findings appeared to contradict the observation that people eat less when being watched (impression management). Herman, Roth, and Polivy ”attempt to reconcile these divergent literatures by reference to a model of inhibitory norms”: ”In the presence of palatable food, and in the absence of clear signals of satiety, people look outward to cues from the environment to determine when to stop eating.” (Corrected 2026-09-19 from ”key insight was that all three effects stem from the same mechanism”, which stated an attempted reconciliation as established. The palatable-food condition had dropped.) Whether later work built on the model is not shown by anything held. `cso03` (Cruwys et al. 2015) is held, but neither its record nor its held abstract mentions Herman (checked 2026-09-10; Europe PMC’s reference list for `cso03` returned HTTP 503 on six tries, so the citation is unchecked, not absent). (Corrected 2026-09-10 from ”became the framework that later work built upon” and ”that claim is checkable rather than asserted”, which offered as evidence a holding that does not contain it.)
