A popular-science treatment of fructose metabolism and its role in metabolic disease. (Previously “the most widely read” — a readership ranking nothing here measures; corrected 2026-09-02, card 6NM98H. The rest of this section is a model of its kind and is untouched.) Translates peer-reviewed mechanisms (de novo lipogenesis, fructose-alcohol parallels, disrupted satiety signaling) into accessible language. Importantly, this is a popular science book with an advocacy thesis (“sugar is a toxin”), not a peer-reviewed study — the “toxin” framing is Lustig’s interpretation, claims about sugar addiction are more contested in the literature, and the book has been criticized for not addressing individual variation in genetics and physical activity. Its liver and lipogenesis claims are consistent with the peer-reviewed records held here (csf01, in mice; csf02; csf03); its alcohol, cortisol and reward-pathway claims have no peer-reviewed record here (corrected 2026-09-10 from ”Core metabolic claims are consistent with the peer-reviewed literature”; see Verification depth).
