Systematic review and meta-analysis published in the *American Journal of Clinical Nutrition* that quantified, across 24 studies, exactly how much attention and memory affect eating. The most striking finding isn't the immediate effect of distraction (SMD 0.39, moderate) but the *delayed* effect: distracted eating nearly doubles subsequent intake (SMD 0.76), because the meal wasn't properly encoded into memory and therefore doesn't suppress later appetite. The review also showed that actively recalling what you ate reduces later intake (SMD -0.40), and that removing visual evidence of eating (pistachio shells, cleared plates) increases consumption (SMD 0.48). For the project, this provides the evidence base for attentive eating interventions: the mechanism isn't mystical mindfulness but concrete memory encoding — when you pay attention to eating, your brain records the meal, and that record suppresses subsequent hunger. This connects to cpi04 (Zlatevska 2014): attentive eating is identified there as a moderator that weakens the portion size effect.
