Why we cite it
Duckworth’s book, setting out the grit framework — passion and perseverance for long-term goals — and her argument that sustained effort matters more than natural talent for long-term achievement. The talent/effort equation (Talent × Effort = Skill, Skill × Effort = Achievement) is her device for placing effort at two stages rather than one.
Mode correction, 2026-09-02 (card SP97Y7). This section previously said the book ”provides the framework for understanding why sustained effort matters more than natural talent” and that the equation ”shows effort contributing at two stages.” Those state a contested thesis as established and treat an author’s heuristic equation as a demonstration. The book argues it; it does not show it.
And the library’s hold on this is second-hand by its own record. Verification depth: ”Content depth: SECOND-HAND… What it does not establish: whether those notes were taken from the book’s own pages or from a summary of it.” So the corpus holds an account of the argument whose own provenance is unresolved.
The talent question is live, not settled. `ksk01` carries the same territory from `csk01` and was corrected the same night: the strong form — that apparent natural talent traces to earlier practice — is exactly what the subsequent literature disputes, and none of that literature is held here. A page may say Duckworth argues effort compounds; it may not use this record to settle talent versus effort in either direction.
