Why we cite it

Companion volume to The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living (2011), focused specifically on athletic performance during carbohydrate restriction. The book describes full fat adaptation in athletes as taking 4-8 weeks or longer, during which performance may initially decline before recovering or exceeding previous levels, and describes the physiological adaptations: increased mitochondrial density, upregulated fatty acid oxidation enzymes, enhanced ketone production, improved fat mobilisation. Builds on Phinney’s own 1983 cyclist study (not held here) and later research. Not peer-reviewed — a popular science book translating the authors’ research and clinical experience for athletes and coaches. `cfa09` (Burke et al. 2017, held) is the measured counterpart and cuts against the book’s performance claim: in elite race walkers the diet ”markedly increases rates of whole-body fat oxidation”, but ”impairs exercise economy and negates the performance benefit from intensified training”. (Corrected 2026-09-10 from ”Establishes … Documents … landmark … The underlying science is well-established in the literature (see also cfa09 … for independent confirmation …)”: this record holds no reading of the book, landmark is the ranking the author notes lost the same day, and `cfa09` does not confirm a performance recovery; it reports the opposite in its sample.)
