Why we cite it

Early exploratory study establishing boredom as the most prevalent and most discomfort-producing emotional trigger for binge eating in a non-clinical female student sample. Introduced the Binge Eating Trigger Checklist (BETCH) as a screening tool. Key contribution is the 66% prevalence figure — two-thirds of binge eaters identifying boredom as a trigger — which has become a widely cited statistic in the boredom-eating literature. Also demonstrated that binge episodes result from combined emotional and physiological antecedents, not single triggers.
