Kahneman D. Thinking, Fast and Slow. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux; 2011. 499 p.
Why we cite it
A popular account of decades of research on judgment and decision-making by a Nobel laureate (previously “The definitive”, corrected 2026-09-02, card 6NM98H). Introduces the System 1/System 2 framework to a general audience and covers the major cognitive biases that affect everyday decisions, including food choices. The sunk cost fallacy, loss aversion, and endowment effect are directly relevant to eating behaviors — why people eat food “to avoid waste,” resist discarding unhealthy purchases, and hold onto habits that no longer serve them. Not peer-reviewed scientific evidence; a popular science book synthesizing decades of research by the author and Amos Tversky. Referenced in companion 422 for the sunk cost fallacy and decision-making under bias.
