Why we cite it

Expanded version of Birch & Fisher 1998 (cce03), reviewing how parental influence shapes eating behaviour from prenatal flavour exposure through adolescence, with extensive quantitative evidence. Relevant to this project because it reveals the specific mechanisms by which well-intentioned parenting practices (restriction, pressure, reward) can backfire — disrupting children’s innate self-regulation and paradoxically increasing preferences for the very foods parents try to limit — and shows that modelling and making healthy foods available are far more effective than instruction or control.
