The foundational book that introduced cognitive therapy to a broad audience, establishing the theoretical and clinical framework that would become the most empirically supported form of psychotherapy. Beck’s central insight: emotional disorders are maintained by systematic errors in thinking (cognitive distortions) — overgeneralisation, all-or-nothing thinking, catastrophising, mind reading, and others. By identifying these automatic thoughts and examining their validity, patients can change their emotional and behavioural responses. Not peer-reviewed — a clinical textbook and theoretical treatise that launched an entire field of psychotherapy. Referenced in companion 409 (the-mindset-block) as the clinical foundation for understanding how limiting beliefs (cognitive distortions) perpetuate unhelpful behaviour patterns, including those related to food and eating.
About the author
Aaron T. Beck, MD (1921-2021), was University Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania — the university’s highest faculty distinction. Founder of cognitive therapy (cognitive behavioural therapy), widely regarded as one of the five most influential psychotherapists of all time. MD from Yale University School of Medicine (1946). Over 600 publications. Created the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), one of the most widely used psychological assessment instruments in history. Founded the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy with his daughter Judith S. Beck, PhD. Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research (2006) — among the most prestigious awards in medicine. APA Lifetime Achievement Award. His cognitive model — that distorted thinking patterns cause emotional distress and maladaptive behaviour, and that identifying and restructuring these thoughts produces therapeutic change — became the most widely practised and empirically validated form of psychotherapy worldwide. Died at age 100.
