Integrative review presenting three non-mutually-exclusive mechanisms by which "metabolically inactive" NNS may promote metabolic dysregulation. Uniquely adds the sweet-taste receptor mechanism (T1R2/T1R3 signaling in gut and pancreas affecting glucose absorption and insulin secretion) to the learning-based (cas04/Swithers) and microbiome (cas02/Suez) mechanisms. Also introduces the finding that individual taste sensitivity to sucralose correlates with its acute metabolic effects — suggesting shared signaling pathways between oral and gut sweet-taste responses.
